Combined data to fight traffic jams

Central Office for Traffic Management, Bavarian State Building Authority

In Bavaria, the traffic information center VIZ BY compiles data from many sources to reduce traffic jams and hazards caused by construction sites or road closures. Okari provides quality assurance, system development, and operational support.

Challenge

Bavaria’s roads are heavily congested – traffic jams, roadworks, and closures affect mobility on a daily basis. Until now, traffic data has been held by many different agencies, often without being consolidated in a central location. The Bavarian Traffic Information Center (VIZ BY) was created to bundle this data, prevent traffic jams, and make traffic safer and more efficient.

Solution

The project collects and processes real-time data for around 55,000 kilometers of roads.
Data sources include the police, Autobahn GmbH, state building authorities, counties, and cities. Okari, together with VMZ Berlin, supports the Bavarian Traffic Management Center (ZVM) in:

  • Quality assurance and maintenance of traffic data
  • Further development of system components
  • Operation of the user hotline

The processed information flows into the BayernInfo portal, the BayernInfo app, and external services such as navigation providers and Mobilithek.

Cooperation with industry, administration, and research ensures the high quality and continuous development of the system.

Added value

VIZ BY provides up-to-date, comprehensive traffic information for the whole of Bavaria.

Results at a glance:
  • Early detection of traffic jams, road closures, and hazardous areas
  • More efficient traffic management and increased safety
  • Support for multimodal travel planning (car, public transport, bicycle, etc.)
  • Provision of open traffic data for partner services

This will make traffic management in Bavaria more digital, more connected, and more future-proof.
