A cross-jurisdictional traffic management system is being established in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region to connect cities and municipalities, provide commuters with better information, and manage traffic more efficiently. Okari is supporting the project on behalf of ivm GmbH by developing the concept, managing the project, and planning and implementing dynamic traffic management strategies to promote climate protection and improve quality of life.
Challenge
In urban areas, heavy traffic volumes are placing an increasing strain on transportation systems and the environment. Even minor incidents can lead to prolonged disruptions in heavily trafficked networks. Effective solutions require treating traffic control and management as a cross-cutting issue, as well as coordinating and implementing measures with the relevant authorities beyond city limits.
Solution
To optimize traffic management, Okari develops coordinated, cross-jurisdictional strategies based on transportation policy and planning objectives. This is achieved through the analysis of traffic problems at previously identified problem areas. A regional expert working group conducts regular consultations on shared goals and strategies, evaluating the results achieved and further developing collaboration.
A central aspect is data management, which is based on shared knowledge of traffic events and current traffic conditions. The implemented strategies are carried out in operational traffic management by the responsible stakeholders based on real-time traffic data. Finally, the coordinated strategies are published in a non-discriminatory manner and in standardized formats to reach a broad segment of the population, both through regional information services and on private navigation devices.
Okari GmbH supports the project by:
- Providing technical and administrative leadership and coordinating all participating partners and government agencies
- Monitoring and steering of partners through task, requirement, and cost management
- Coordination, organization, and facilitation/mediation of project-related working groups (expert workshops/advisory board meetings) and committee meetings/transportation committees
- Development of a regional target concept for cross-jurisdictional dynamic traffic management
- Identification of traffic problem areas and detailed planning of cross-jurisdictional strategies for five corridors to implement traffic management measures and the necessary traffic management systems
- Drafting of binding cooperation agreements and strategic agreements with the participating stakeholders, as well as organizational and financing models
- Support for strategy implementation and integration into workflow systems of the relevant traffic systems
Added Value
An important contribution to climate protection goals: Thanks to intelligent traffic management, commuter flows can be efficiently directed and residents can be informed early on about alternative modes of transportation.
