Greater Nuremberg Transport Association GmbH (VGN)

In rural areas, public transport is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain—therefore, a digital dispatch center for taxis on demand is being developed at the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association (VGN). Okari is responsible for project development and the integration of various transport companies.

Challenge

Mobility is changing—especially in rural areas.
Traditional fixed-route public transport is increasingly reaching its limits: declining passenger numbers, staff shortages, and rising costs are making the operation of many routes uneconomical. At the same time, passengers are demanding more flexible, digital, and environmentally friendly mobility options.

To meet these challenges, the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association (VGN) is taking new approaches—with a digital, demand-responsive mobility platform that integrates and efficiently coordinates various on-demand transport services.

Solution

By implementing a network-wide dispatch center, various forms of demand-responsive transport within the VGN area are deeply integrated into existing information systems, allowing on-demand services and call buses to be digitally represented and bookable in a unified way—for the first time, across municipal boundaries.

We support the project through:

  • Funding support
  • Identification of requirements and preparation of technical specifications
  • System administration, integration, configuration, and testing of data and information
  • Training for transport companies and municipal staff
  • Coordination of tasks and stakeholders during operations
  • Management of the entire project—from the feasibility study to implementation support

Added value

With this innovative solution, VGN is a pioneer in the digitalization of demand-responsive public transport. Passengers benefit from a central, user-friendly booking and information platform that unites various on-demand services in rural regions. The project thus creates a new level of connectivity and convenience for all users of public transport in Bavaria. In the future, all districts and cities wishing to offer their demand-responsive services digitally and conveniently are to be integrated into the VGN dispatch center.
