In the Stuttgart region, the “Regional Mobility Platform (RMP)” ensures that commuter, commercial, and long-distance traffic is managed dynamically—across municipal boundaries. Okari leads the expert consortium, develops traffic management strategies, and oversees their implementation until comprehensive connectivity is achieved.
Challenge
In the Stuttgart region, commuter, commercial, and long-distance traffic overlap. This leads to frequent traffic jams, which have a significant environmental impact. The Stuttgart Region Association has launched the flagship project “Regional Mobility Platform (RMP),” which aims to design and implement a cross-jurisdictional dynamic traffic management system.
Solution
Starting with the busiest areas of the region, work has begun in four pilot corridors around the state capital of Stuttgart to develop solutions for existing traffic problems, congestion, and overloading in collaboration with road authorities. To optimize traffic management, coordinated, cross-jurisdictional strategies are being developed based on transportation policy and planning objectives. This is achieved through the analysis of traffic problems at previously identified problem areas. A regional expert forum held regular consultations on common goals and traffic management strategies, during which the expected effects were evaluated and cooperation was further developed.
In the cities of Böblingen, Leonberg, Ditzingen, Fellbach, and Waiblingen, the previously developed traffic management strategies can thus be initiated from the new regional traffic management center (“Ringzentrale”) and activated as needed based on the situation.
Okari GmbH supports the project by:
- Providing technical and administrative leadership and coordinating all participating partners and government agencies
- Monitoring and steering of partners through task, requirement, and cost management
- Coordination, organization, and facilitation/mediation of project-related working groups (expert workshops/advisory board meetings) and committee meetings/transportation committees
- Development of a regional target concept for cross-jurisdictional dynamic traffic management
- Identification of traffic problem areas and detailed planning of cross-jurisdictional strategies for four corridors to implement traffic management measures and the necessary traffic management systems
- Drafting of binding cooperation agreements and strategic agreements with the participating stakeholders, as well as organizational and financing models
- Support for strategy implementation and integration into workflow systems of the relevant traffic systems
Added value
The Regional Mobility Platform is thus evolving into a reliable platform for sharing mobility information on the region’s roads. The scope of the “Ringzentrale” is not yet fully defined in its current form and is set to expand to include additional corridors.
